Description of setting: This is the third floor of an apartment that is including 12 floors.

Immediate context:  Alex sits on the carpet of his living room. A writing case put on the ground nearby him. There is a toy box in the corne

r of the room. His mother is cleaning the house.

First Names of Child Observed: Alex

Brief Description of Child—gender / age / position in family:

A Chinese boy who is speaks Chinese and ages 2 years and 4 months. He is the eldest and stays with parents and her young sister ages 6 months stays with grandmother. And he likes to draw and listen music.

Aim of Observation:

To observe the Alex’s drawing skill.

  

                    Observation of Alex

9.05am

By using the palm of his right hand, Alex takes all the crayons on the ground while sitting on the ground of the living room. He then looks around and start speaking to himself: ’no paper…’ Repeat three times. After 10 seconds, he notices the toy in front of him. He stands up and runs to the toy box and looks into it by lowering his head. While squatting, he search everywhere in the toy box using both hands. He then pick up a teddy bear and speaking to himself: ‘doggie…’

09:06am

Suddenly, he throws away the teddy bear and sways the toy box back and forth. Then take out all the toys fr

om toy box. Include a few of mini cars, a small plastic cup, a doll, a pictorial, a small basketball and etc. His eyes has paused a second on the pictorial. After he searches the toy box for 30 seconds, he stands up and continues saying ‘no book, no book’. Repeat five times. During that time, his mother is busy doing her housework. She heard Alex speaking to himself. She stops for awhile and takes a few white papers out below the coffee table and gives the papers to Alex. At the same time his mother speak to him with softly voice: ‘dear baby, drawing on this papers’. He shakes his hand for a while then holding the papers using his both hands. He then sit down quietly and starts turning the pages at the bottom of right corner one by one using his fingers of right hand.

09:08am

 He picks up one page of papers using pincer grasp of his right hand. He then put the page in front of him and grabs a blue crayon and starts drawing horizontal lines with five fingers of his right hand. He puts down the blue crayon and pick up the orange one and starts drawing the same thing all over again. He continues doing so by using other color crayons. After drawing the horizontal lines with all the crayons, he picks up a new page and starts drawing vertical lines. When he finishes using all the six color crayons, he pick up the original page again and starts drawing cross lines on it. After drawing lines, he takes a green crayon to draw some simple shapes such as circle and wave on the next page. When he drew a circle on the page by using the red crayon, he call his mother: ’mummy, mummy, sun, sun, see.’ He then looks around room, his mother not here. He continues repeat the words to himself: ’ mummy, sun, mummy, sun…’

Alex grasps the red crayon with his five fingers of right hand. He turns the former page with thumb and forefinger of his left hand. He turned out the first page, and then he drawing circles on the end of each horizontal line on the paper using red crayon. After he drew three circles, he change red crayon to golden crayon and draws a circle on a new paper. At the same time, he talks to himself: ‘ Baba… boom… ball, ball, this ball, Baba…ball, ball’. After this, he grasps the blue crayon and draws a circle next to the red circle. He continues do so until finished using all the crayons. And then he throws the crayon that is in his right hand and runs to the kitchen to find his mother.
